Day one of the first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Galle had a rough start for the visitors. Within the first hour, Bangladesh was struggling at 45 for 3. But from that low point, two experienced batters — Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim — turned things around completely.
By the end of the day, Bangladesh stood strong at 292 for 3, thanks to a magnificent unbeaten partnership of 247 runs between Shanto and Mushfiqur. Their performances not only rescued Bangladesh from a shaky start but also gave them full control of the opening day.
A Tough Beginning for Bangladesh
The day didn’t start well for the visitors. After winning the toss and choosing to bat — a smart move in the typically spin-friendly conditions of Galle — Bangladesh hoped for a solid start. But Sri Lanka’s bowlers, especially debutant Tharindu Rathnayake, made early breakthroughs.
In just a few overs, Bangladesh lost three wickets for only 45 runs. Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, and another top-order batter were back in the pavilion, and pressure was building fast. Najmul Hossain Shanto had barely faced a few balls when he saw his team in trouble.

Shanto Shows His Class
But Shanto didn’t panic. In fact, he decided to take charge. On just his sixth ball, he danced down the pitch and hit Tharindu straight over his head for a boundary. That bold move sent a message — Shanto was not going to be shaken by early setbacks.
He kept his focus and slowly built his innings, mixing calm defense with smart attacking shots. By the end of the day, he was unbeaten on 136 runs, scoring his first Test century since November 2023.
His century was a clear sign of maturity and leadership, especially considering he’s one of the rising stars in Bangladesh cricket.
Mushfiqur Proves Experience Still Counts
Joining Shanto at the crease was veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim, one of the most respected players in Bangladesh’s history. Mushfiqur played with his usual calm and confidence, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries.
He stayed not out on 105, completing yet another Test century in his long career. His partnership with Shanto was built on patience, skill, and excellent communication.
The duo frustrated Sri Lanka’s bowlers for the rest of the day. They were never reckless but always alert for scoring chances. It was classic Test match batting — smart, steady, and powerful.
Sri Lanka’s Bowlers Struggle
Sri Lanka had a strong start, but once Shanto and Mushfiqur settled in, their bowlers began to struggle. The debutant Tharindu Rathnayake picked up two wickets, but also gave away 124 runs in 32 overs. The experienced Prabath Jayasuriya bowled many overs without much success.
Milan Rathnayake, one of the pacers, was the most economical, giving away only 19 runs in 12 overs, but didn’t manage to take a wicket. The heat and flat conditions also made it hard for bowlers to get help from the pitch.
By the end of day one, Sri Lanka looked tired and out of ideas. Bangladesh, on the other hand, looked strong and confident.
A Day to Remember for Bangladesh
Day one clearly belonged to Bangladesh. After a very shaky start, they showed strong character to bounce back. Shanto’s career-best performance and Mushfiqur’s experience formed the perfect partnership. They now have the upper hand going into day two, and with seven wickets still in hand, they’ll be looking to post a massive first-innings score.
Bangladesh fans have every reason to be proud. This was not just a comeback — it was a statement.
